BREAKING!
“In a match this size, it is impossible to address every single competitor. I won’t try. Instead, I’ll offer a warning to everyone - a story.”
The scene fades in from darkness and shows Chris Callum standing in front of a forest. The image of the trees is projected behind him as he paces slowly, his hands clasped together and his jaw agape. Clearly something was bothering him; his head flicked quickly to the right and his fingers twitched. Chris took a deep breath and looked into the camera.
“Not so long ago I fought a man named Alioth Starre. He called himself Mephistopheles, the devil. He said that he crept around in the shadows and watched from a distance. When he was ready, he would strike. He always won. For years he always won. But then I came around and I killed the devil. It was me who destroyed his legacy. And now, when one looks back at Galveston Island Wrestling, they don’t talk about him. They talk about me. I’m the legend now. The savior.”
His twitching become more intense. Chris falls to his knees and looks into the camera, moving back and forth with his chest leading the way. He screams:
“Maybe that devil means nothing to you! Maybe you’re screaming at the screen telling me to shut up and talk about something that matters; something today, but you are foolish. The devil is HERE in RSW! I can sense him! And I will be the one to end him!”
The heavy metal door slammed open. Aspen Chaud was there, dressed in a black dress yet again. She looked over at the forest projection and then down at Chris. By this point, Chris has his head in his hands and was trying to hold back tears. Drops of spit and tears feel form his hands as Aspen rans to his side, holding him tight like a mother would hold her child.
“Chris, what the…”
Aspen pulled Chris’ head up by the hair and looked directly into his eyes. Her hands slid down his face and covered his cheeks. She brushed a tear from his eye before turning over to the camera. Politely, she spoke to the crew member.
“Turn that thing off. We aren’t scheduled until later tonight.”
The camera quickly jolted, as if it were taken off of a tripod. Aspen turned back to Chris.
“Hey, look at me Chris.”
She gripped his head tightly and turned it towards her, but his eyes were focused on the wall. The pupils were like a drop of ink in a glass of milk. They were spread wide until… CRACK. Aspen, with her red nails, slapped him across the face.
“Look at me!”
With a red welt on the side of his face, Chris turned to Aspen with a big frown. The camera was clearly placed on the ground, low and steady. We could see phlegm falling from Chris’ nose as he growled at Aspen.
“It’s here Aspen. The devil is close. I can feel it in my bones.”
She grit her teeth and pulled him up to his feet. Aspen was surprisingly strong for her size. His knees wobbled, but he was able to regain some control of his body.
“Okay that’s neat Chris, get up on your feet please.”
Chris’ knees locked and he stood. He took a deep breath and let his head tilt towards the sky. Aspen rubbed his back and held his hand as they made their way back to the door. As they went to leave, Aspen snapped her head towards the camera on the floor and grit her teeth.
“Can I trust you to get back to the car Chris. I need to deal with something first.”
He nodded and she watched him exit the room. When the room was cleared, Aspen moved quickly towards the camera man. She found him in the corner, packing up his things. He was a tall man with sandy brown hair and a decent beard. Clearly a student. Maybe this was one of his first runs. Aspen wanted to make sure he would never forget it.
“Who the fuck do you think you are?”
She grabbed him by the collar of his t-shirt and slammed him against the fall. The man struggled to speak, only managing a gurgle of spit. Aspen laughed.
“Huh? Do you know who I am?”
She tightened her grip on the cameraman.
“When I tell you to turn off the fucking camera, you turn off the fucking camera.”
Aspen made her way over to the camera that was sitting on the floor - the camera that caught all of the footage.
“In fact, when I tell you to do anything, I expect you to listen. I don’t run this place yet, but in due time, my friend.”
Aspen slammed the camera against the ground. It wasn’t just anger, it was rage. Maternal rage. Protecting her kin. Plastic pieces sprayed across the room. When he felt the camera was sufficiently damaged, she made her way back over to him.
“What’s your name, kid?”
She slid down beside him, pressing her back against the wall. At this point, the video was just fuzzy lines, but we could hear them talking.
“Derek.”
She snickered and slapped something, possibly his leg.
“Derek… thank you for cooperating. No one needs to see Chris like this.”
There was a short pause. Derek spoke, his voice quivering.
“What… happened to him…”
Another long pause. Aspen’s voice flowed smoothly.
“He just hasn’t realized that the only devil here is me.”
The video abruptly ends.
