He sat with slouch in the chair, both hands impatiently tapping the arm rests. He stared up at the clock, which rested just above Caroline May’s head. She paid no attention, just sitting there and writing in her notepad. Jotting down, twisting and turning, every word James Locke had spoken.
Caroline May: “Tell me more about this dream you had James.”
King: “I rather not talk about it anymore.”
Caroline May: “Why is that?”
King: “I just don’t want to talk about it anymore.”
She nodded her head, writing more in her notepad.
King: “Can I see what you are writing.”
Caroline glanced up at James and stopped writing in her notepad. She placed the pen down on the book and removed her glasses as she sat back, taking a break from writing, gathering notes of the session. She gave James her full attention, making eye contact and not looking away.
Caroline May: “Is it distracting James?”
King: “It’s not distracting."
Caroline May: “Do you wish to see James?”
His hands stopped tapping. He brought his eyes down to her lap, where the notepad rested. He shrugged his shoulders. Just trying to kill minutes so that this therapy session would end soon enough.
Caroline May: “Let us change the topic of conversation, let’s move on; tell me about Ready Set Wrestle. You informed me last week; that you had signed there, but before you could get into detail, our session was over.”
King: “I was looking for work, anything I could get my hands on but with the record attached to me, and the ex-convict nametag hanging over my head, nobody out there would hire me. Even Walmart turned me away as a door greeter you know. Can't I even be a door greeter at Walmart? It not like I’m going to scare anybody away, people don’t even know who I am. I just am another face in public you know?”
Caroline placed her glasses back onto her head, picked up her pen and started scribbling notes again. James paid no attention.
King: “So honestly I was out of options, and obviously upset. I tried for a week, but kept getting rejection after rejection and kept coming up empty handed, until I ran into this women. Her name was Georgia DeLise, and when I say ran, I ran into her, knocked her down on her ass. Which maybe it was fate you know. We started talking, and I found out she owned a wrestling promotion.”
Caroline May: “Ready Set Wrestle?”
King: “Yeah, she is the owner of Ready Set Wrestle. I came fully out, no hiding anything, told her about my past, my ex-convict status, and that I have a lot of training, in both the arts of kickboxing and jiu-jitsu. Some wrestling skills, but only high school wrestling ability. She seemed super interested, and told me to come down to her office the next day, and she would get me a job. A first I thought, this lady was just going to hook me up as a custodian or some concession stand, that will be two dollars and fifty cents, you know.”
She didn’t respond, instead took pauses during taking notes to make eye contact with James.
King: “Nope, when I went down there, she set me up on a tryout contract, even put me in touch with this trainer, and now in under two weeks times, I make my professional debut.”
Caroline May: “So you will be facing an opponent?”
King: “Lord Blake. Which I will be honest, I’m not going to lie about it, but I was quite nervous at first. But going over some of my notes.”
King shot a look at the notepad.
King: “There isn’t anything for me nervous about you know. So what if his parents where both wrestlers back in the day. He still has about as much wrestling experience as myself. It’s kind of bittersweet you know. First match, against another up and comer, newbie is what I think they call it. It makes the situation easier to grasp. I hear he is strong and powerful, due to body building, but he lacks any speed and cardio. His weakness is my strength, you know.”
The clock behind Caroline's head made a buzzing noise. James wasted no time getting up from his seat as Caroline closed her notebook and stood up as well.
King: “Until next week doc.”
King exited the office.
