The clicking of black Oxford dress shoes on the marble flooring are annoyingly audible. We’re on the fifty-third floor of an office tower in the heart of Pasadena. We’re greeted with the imagery of a well distinguished male, mid-fifties at best guess by the aging in his face and the silver-grey hair that’s neatly styled, and matching grey beard that’s properly groomed. He wore a black Hugo Boss three piece suit with pale blue shirt and a matching black tie. In tow behind him was a younger female, maybe an intern, dressed in a form fitting black pencil skirt and a deep red button down shirt. Her blonde hair in a messy bun behind her head and a pair of black framed glasses. She hurried to close the gap between them, in order to walk just behind him. She held a stack of papers in her hand, and looked down at them as her voice drowned the clicking of the Oxfords, which had now been joined by her high heels.
“Mister Larsen, I hope your Holiday vacation was well. I heard the business meeting in Guadalajara went in our favor as they’ve called now to confirm partnering with us. They called a couple of days ago, and I forwarded them to your voicemail. I suspect that you’ll have a message waiting for you.”
“Thank you, Lauren.”
Mr. Larsen, as he was addressed, stops walking causing Lauren to stop suddenly as well. He turned on the heels of his Oxford’s and faced her with a smile.
“I apologize, how rude of me. – How was your holiday? I take it that you spent it with your loved ones? I hope all is well.”
“Thank you, sir. It was quite lovely. I visited family in Vancouver.”
Nodding his head as she spoke, and after she informed him of what she had done over her holiday.
“That sounds like a fantastic time, we shall discuss that later. But right now, we’re on the clock. I will return the call in a little while. But first thing is first. While I was in Guadalajara, I attended a professional wrestling event. And over the course of my Holiday vacation, I bounced around the idea of entering a new business venture. This partnership will be the perfect opportunity for that. So, I have a task to ask of you. There was a fellow whom I watched compete in Mexico, he wrestles under the name of Zero. I need you to contact him.”
“Wrestling, sir? Are you sure?”
He didn’t respond, just looked blankly at her. She took the combination of silence, and his glare as an answer. She backed down a little, nodding her head.
“Okay, right away. I’ll find his information and contact him immediately. Should I tell him what this is about, or…?”
“Just let him know that a very wealthy fan in Pasadena has a business proposition for him. If he agrees for a meeting, I will cover any and all expenses.”
She nodded her head, but didn’t say anything more. She would hurry past him and to her desk in the middle of the “reception area”. He smiled, his eyes following her. He uncrossed his hands from behind him, that he had previously done as he spoke to her directly, and turned to walk into his office.
4:53pm
The name “Miles Larsen” laser engraved into several plaques and awards around his office. A life time of accomplishments in his field of work that has led him to this day in his life. He sat behind his stained oak desk, Apple iMac on in front of him as he scans his eyes over the countless emails that have come in today on his return from vacation. He read and replied away, until a knock on his door interrupted him. He called them in with a simple, “come in”. The door opened slowly and in walked his assistant, Lauren and she would approach his desk casually. As she came closer, he folded one hand over the other on his desktop and looked up away from the screen.
“Sorry to interrupt, but I’ve done the research you’ve asked me to do on the wrestler, Zero.”
“Ah! Do tell.”
He was genuinely intrigued. She gracefully sat down in one of the two leather chairs in front of the desk, crossing one leg over the other after she did.
“Well, other than a laundry list of top-quality matches and a handful of accomplishments in Mexico; I couldn’t locate any personal information on him. However. I did come across two things. One, a contact email for booking inquiries – and if you are still interested in him after this next news, we can email him that way.”
“Next news?”
“After the event you mentioned this morning in Guadalajara, it seems that he’s been blacklisted from the sport in Mexico. The doctors reports on his opponent, Angel Asesino, came back and his arm was broken completely. The wrestling-community thought very highly of Angel and found the actions of Zero were excessive. With Angel’s connections in the wrestling industry there, companies began to cut ties with Zero, showing solidarity in supporting Angel – and perhaps even in fear of him doing that to other athletes housed by the various companies.”
“I remember that, during the match. So it seems our boy has a bit of a mean streak to him…I like that. So if he’s blacklisted from Mexican companies, I think the option of wrestling State-side will entice him, don’t you? This is excellent news, Lauren. Good job. Now I would like you to reach out to him. Explain to him that I understand the situation he’s in currently, and I have options for him. Turns out, Lauren, I have a friend with a nose in the industry and he informs me that fairly soon a company will be opening in San Franciso. If we can get out boy here, and the paperwork for his immigration visa approved – then that is where we will go.”
“So you’re going into the business of being an agent?”
“You’re absolutely correct, my dear!” He said, standing to his feet. “As you suspected, I had a message left on my voicemail and they have agreed to our terms for the partnership. So with this new merger, I will be selling my stake of the company for a substantial amount of money – and enter the world of professional wrestling as an agent. And if all goes as planned, the agent for one – a mister Zero.”
Proud smile from Miles Larsen. Lauren uncrosses her legs, standing up afterword. She would straighten out the skirt she wore, and look approvingly at her boss…or soon to be, former boss.
“Congratulations, sir. I will contact Zero immediately, then.”
She turned on her heels and began her walk out of the office, leaving Miles to turn and look out of the window behind him. The sun was beginning to set over the city of Pasadena. If all goes as he’s planned, he will soon be relocating to San Francisco to begin this new venture in his life.
