you shouldn't feel any better [vendetta i]"God-- fucking-- sh--"
Like many of the denizens in the United States, PokemonGO was infiltrating into even the most non-nerd homes. It hadn’t escape the grasp of makeup designers, nor did it escape the grasp of celebrities, and it most certainly didn’t escape the grasp of wrestlers like . . . Aaron Asphyxia.
The newcomer to Ready Set Wrestle was set to debut in a match against Raven MacDemare, a newbie in the Wide World of Wrestling. This didn’t bother Aaron at all – once upon a time, she might've been irate that she was given a blooming star, but years of training wrestlers had left Miss Asphyxia feeling rather invigorated and excited to see new blood. There was no irritation. She truly, truly wanted to start over.
Walking down the sidewalk in the busiest part of Downtown Seattle in a pair of black chucks, a pair of denim, ripped grey shorts, and a black World of Warcraft shirt bearing the logo of the Horde was Aaron herself. Her eyes were glued to her phone, or at least, they were. She currently was staring at the sky in frustration.
“Fucking last PokeBall . . .” She muttered to herself, and shoved her iPhone (upside down) into her back pocket. Closing her eyes for a moment, she stretched high to the ceiling, and then let out a breath of air, opening her eyes once more.
“When I was a kid,” she started, “Pokemon was one the first things I became obsessed about. I played the games non-stop, my game boy eventually dying because of over-usage. School came easy to me, and I spent days and days playing. Now, it’s recreated in a form of a game where, instead of an avatar, I get to be the trainer. My job is to capture Pokemon, and to be the very best there ever was.” She pauses, and then adds, “Kind of like now.”
“It’s been a year since I was in the ring officially, not counting one match in early February. One year since I was able to showcase the skills I’ve earned. And now . . . now I face a relative newcomer to the entire sport herself, Raven MacDemare. Sweetie, I hope you’re listening. I really do. Because you’re going to want to take the next few words I say very seriously.
“It’s great and all that you want to be a wrestler. With a past like yours, being a former cheerleader means you’re athletic and set-up well to do this. You could be great. But, you can sit there and analyze every single piece of what my sheet says, and it won’t matter. It just doesn’t. You can study past videos of me, but that only gives you a glimpse into what I can do, and will do to you in the ring. Your little Bubbles over there shouldn’t feel any better about you facing off against me, because I’m going to literally be the hardest one you’ve faced so far.”
She inhales, closes her eyes for a moment, and then opens those brown orbs up one more time.
“I’ve done a lot in my career, yes. I’ve done many things well in my career. But the one thing that I’ve never attained was the top tier championship. The only person I have left to prove anything to is myself, and only myself. Raven, you’ve faced off against two male adversaries in the past two weeks. When you think you lack in size and demeanor, you set yourself up to fail. I’ve taken championships off of men like themin the past because I don’t let their size or stature get to me. You’re confident because I’m more on your level, but you could have done so much better if you believed in yourself.”
“I look forward to facing you not because I’m going to stomp on you, but because, for once, you’re going to see what it’s like to face someone who doesn’t sit and study for days on end for no reason. Just someone who feels the match itself. It’ll be a lesson. I’ll see you again soon. Earnestly, I say good luck.”
Aaron pauses, and smiles as mockingly sweetly as possible. She pulls her phone out, swiping to PokemonGO to continue her game.
“Because you’ll need it.”
