throw in the towel [vendetta iii]Thursday was approaching quicker than expected, and with it came restlessness. For the average person, that included anything from foot tapping, to finger tapping, or any kind of tapping, wiggling or general impulsivity. For Aaron Asphyxia, however, it became calm, almost stoic, and silent -- deathly silent. The closer the date of Vendetta, the more and more withdrawn she became. It wasn't nerves, no -- after fifteen years, nervousness wasn't even in the game. But anxiety, overthinking, and stress would always be her flaws. Especially when she set foot into a new world that was definitely like nothing she'd been a part of.
Sea-Tac was bustling in the early hour of six o'clock. Travelers and businesspersons alike moved hurriedly across the concourse trying to reach their flight in time. Aaron, with her hair pulled tightly into a ponytail, sat statuesque at her scheduled gate, her eyes passing each person as they moved past her. Behind her, she could hear the sound of a child as they dashed about, squealing and laughing the entire time. If she turned around, she knew what she would see: a parent ignoring their misbehaved child because of they lacked responsibility and respect for others. Much like the rest of society. In front of her, a disheveled man snored loudly, as he had been since she set foot into the room. She glanced at the gate, to the tarmac that would lead her to the Boeing 737 that would land eventually in San Francisco. It was one step closer to her destination. One step closer to Vendetta.
Despite her many, many years in the business, the show on Thursday would be a new adventure for her. She had found it strange that, unlike the world she used to live in, the most important part of your argument wasn't the "You suck, get on my level" line, but the ability to evaluate and decipher how the best strategy to approach your opponent. Aaron was human, and mistakes could be made, but that was her very first. A rookie kind of mistake, the one she shouldn't have made. But actually, that made her feel better. It might have affected her judgement briefly, made her think she couldn't handle the new standard, but then again, a veteran who was intelligent and determined knew how to acclimate in a new climate. She would never just throw in the towel.
Her underestimation of Raven had also been a mistake, but it was extremely hard not to be cocky. Raven's entire career thus far had been one filled with disappointment and loss, from day one. A disqualification in her first match against a rookie (may he rest in peace) because her boyfriend couldn't stand to see another man possibility put a scratch on the girl, and another loss because Bubbles threw in a surrender flag. Had her opponents been small, petite little girls, would he have "helped" her too? Her lip curled up in disgust. She spent years fighting for women's opportunities to face men, because despite their feminine wiles and their small frames, the best trained could take out a man twice their size, because they knew what they were doing. Raven could get there, one day. If she was ever allowed to.
But speed and agility, focus and determination hadn't helped Raven in her matches. When it came down to it, she was much too focused on outside interference. She was much too focused, and that was her biggest and most fatal flaw. If Aaron could get in a submission or two when she suddenly had a moment of A.D.D., Raven could tap. If she could hit her 720 DDT when the young socialite was focused on the referee, or a fan, she could pin her for 1-2-3. Raven was determined, yes. But Aaron had more skills and intelligence, higher power hits and better technique in general. She trained in Japan. She knew what she was doing. She had more to prove, to show that she wasn't a washed up, waste of space like she was told every time a company closed.
No, Aaron had a reason to fight for her win. She would always have a reason to fight for her win. She needed to stay composed and concentrated. She wouldn't overlook Raven's skill set, or her growing ability. She wouldn't throw in the towel.
No surrender.
No failure.
None.FIN
