HOME VIDEO - GWA MENACE - AUGUST 8, 2004
Jake and Dominic tagged in and out during their match while two men watched on a monitor backstage. They dissected the teamwork of their finest protégés as they competed before the show went live. They went back and forth, verbally taking notes. A girl stood nearby with her head poked through the curtain, reigning in often to hear the pearls of wisdom her father dropped about pro wrestling. Behind them a boy sprawled out on a row of chairs playing Monopoly on his phone and texting a girl, no interest whatsoever in what happened around him.
“You know, I don’t think it’s going to work out for us.”
During a break in action the men turned to each other.
“As awesome as that would be, he’s just too smitten with Geno and Tanith’s kid. I don’t think he’s even looked at another girl since I brought him around that time.”
The other one shakes his head and laughs.
“Yeah, seems like a pipe dream at this point, doesn’t it? Too bad, could’ve been actual brothers… uh, in-law, or whatever that would have made us.”
The boy glares over his phone at the keen girl soaking in the knowledge of the two men; always seemed like his dad spent more time with everyone else when he brought him to these things. Someone comes by and pulls the kid’s cell out of his hand before sitting down next to him.
“I saw that look, kid. I get it. I don’t know why there’s a Chaos backstage at GWA, let alone two of ‘em. Your old man likes the guy - doesn’t mean I have to. And look at the girl. So keen to learn, but don’t let that fool you; something weird about that girl. She’s definitely gonna end up being a serial killer, just watch.”
The man his dad would later hire laughed and tossed Lord’s phone back to him.
“So how’s Geno’s kid doing…”
He hadn’t seen Lord in a few days, despite living in the same house. Even during the traditional Wednesday night house party he made laps asking of Lord’s whereabouts. Nothing.
He'd considered recanting his suggestion that Raven throw her match, even with his multitude of reasons. In fact, he was ready to. But he wanted to do it face-to-face and, having not seen Lovey, he couldn't.
So here he sat like every other morning eating Cook’s bacon and eggs and pancakes and sausage and omelette and French toast. Just like every other morning lately he ate alone next to two cooling plates.
He flips through the notebook that contains notes on King, Zero and Aaron. He'd added in the notes about Mondae Chaos - almost entirely from memory, mind you - as a peace offering.
“You're not going to out-wrestle her, obviously. She's learned from the best minds in the business: Chris and Keilli Chaos, plus a whole slew of EEW and GWA competitors. Once she gets you on the ground she's got a couple of submissions she can lock from there. Taking it to the mat with her is pointless in your case.
“Here's where you can use it against her though: your best best is to back her into a corner - make her think you want to wrestle her, and then just nail the shit out of her, like you did with Aaron. She's far too quick for you if you tried turn it into a speed game so really get her comfortable while staying near the ropes then hit a knee to the face.
“You can beat her. You’ve got a better mind for that ring than she does, even after she’s been preparing for this for years. Use that to your advantage - if you wait for her to make a mistake, and she will, you can capitalize on it. She’s got the composure and morals of an angry pirate. If her mistake is threatening you with a lead pipe, let her do it. It’s an easy disqualification and you advance in the tournament.
“Most of all, remember
IT'S MORE THAN JUST A WIN
He closes the notebook and centers it on the kitchen table next to a copy of How To Handle Aggressive and Controlling People before standing up and leaving. Lord would get this eventually.
