Looking very uncomfortable, the heroine of our story checks her appearance in a pocket mirror before a hostess calls her name.
“Samantha?”
Startled she looks up, her brown eyes wide. Today, Sammi is not dressed like she usually is. She’s curled her normally straight dark hair and is wearing a new dress. She wipes her palms on the sides, trying to relieve the nervousness. The hostess watches her curiously.
The Cabana Club Cafe in Beverly Hills was a very ritzy place. In fact, by far the ritziest that Sammi had ever been too. Which was why when Matt had told her to dress nice, he’d even given her an account at one of the big stores on Rodeo Drive. Thankfully, the women there had been nice to her. She watched Pretty Woman. She knew that high-class ladies didn’t like not so high-class ladies like herself but money talked. Except she wasn't a... prostitute like Julia Roberts, she was worse... She was a nerdy little girl. Even she knew that in her limited life experience.
The hostess led her to an empty table and she sat.
“Would you like a drink to start, while you wait for Mr.Reece?”
“Ummm... do you have chocolate milk?”
The hostess looks mortified at the suggestion. Sammi quickly recovers.
“It’s a joke. Ummm.. just water is good...”
The hostess smiles and leaves. Sammi takes a deep breath, she had almost been mortified herself. Looking around she sees that some of the people have half full glasses of yellowish and red liquid. Sammi had never tasted wine, nor had she wanted too.
Seconds later, a waiter puts a glass of water with a lemon in it in front of her. She thanks him and he nods.
Matthew Reece was her trainer. The one that had taken up and finished her training after Cillian passed away. He’d been generous enough to call it a ‘scholarship’ and not expect her to pay for any of it. It had resulted in her and her grandmother basically living in California for weeks at a time. The hotel was like a small apartment but it made Sam (Senior) uneasy and paranoid. Eventually, Sammi started going by herself and using Matt’s private plane to go back and forth every few days.
Minutes later, the tall well-built man she had come to get to know over the last year takes the seat in front of her. He gives her a crooked silly smile. As mature and business oriented that Matt was, Sammi had brought out the goofball in him.
“You look very nice Sam.”
He was the only one that had gotten away with calling her Sam. She usually didn’t like it because that was what her grandmother preferred to be called.
“Thankies. You know you didn’t have to, I’m sure I could have found something in grams closet that would be suitable.”
He brushes it off. “Believe me, I have more money than I know what to rightfully do with, spending a few hundred on a nice dress for you is a pleasure.”
He picks up the menu.
This lunch was for his birthday, even though when Sammi said she couldn’t afford to actually buy him lunch he’d laughed at her over the phone and told her that her company was present enough.
“The burger is really good here.” he laughs.
It’s funny because despite his presence, his professionalism and the fact that he ran a company he hadn’t been born into the money or the business. He had worked his way up to this and then once his business was successful he’d done his wrestling training. He had worked hard and won the WWO championship and kept it for a successful 175 days. He had been the face of that company. Sammi had watched every episode of Wreckage. Watching him be the hero everyone wanted. That was two years ago now. And one of those years she had spent letting her idol polish her skills.
“You mean to tell me that we came to this totesily expensive restaurant to have burgers?...”
She looks at the menu and her eyes bug out at the price.
“Holey Moley Matty... We could totesily go to In-and-Out burger for so much less!”
Matt smiles warmly.
“Maybe but then you wouldn't get to look so pretty for me now would you?”
Deep down, the woman part of Sammi, the instinctual part of being female knew this was a flirt. She thought for a second of how she should react to it. Should she return it? Should she smile, maybe reach for his hand?
But then she didn't know if that was quite the right reaction seeing as how in the few years when she'd been allowed to leave her house alone, not one single male had shown her an ounce of attention. So, she pushes it down again and replies the only way she knows how.
“Well thankies, Matt. I guess I clean up good.”
“Not to say you weren't already gorgeous.”
This once again throws Sammi off. She can't control the blush that creeps up her neck and into her cheeks. Matt's playful smile turns to one of Manly satisfaction from getting the reaction he was looking for from his initial comment.
“You can't be that naive Sam. You know that I would be honored to call you my girl. You're talented, smart, not to mention charitable, humble and incredibly sweet. I already mentioned your beauty but it's what's in there...”
He points at her chest.
“That really shows your true beauty. All you have gone through... struggled with and yet you still keep that big smile on your face and try to make this world a better place. That is probably the most heroic quality of them all.”
“Matt...”
Her voice is caught in her throat. No one had ever complimented her this much in one sitting before. She was overwhelmed by it. A hand flutters to her throat.
“I know that 12 years is a huge difference in age but I don't think that would be an issue for people like us. I would really like to make this more than friendship between us.” Sammi's mouth drops open in shock.
She's about to answer when a hand snaps in her face.
“Sam? You alright? I say that the burgers are good here and then I lose you for a good five minutes. Are you feeling okay?”
Sammi nods, embarrassment at her daydream.
“I'm Fine. Can I ask you a question?”
Matt puts the menu down to look her straight in the eyes. “Anything.”
“Would you date me?”
Matt smiles. “Samantha, you are a very attractive girl with a plethora of desirable qualities. Any guy would be lucky to have you.”
She shakes her head. “No. I mean you... like personally. Would you ask me out?”
Matt smiles, but it's one a father might give. “You're not really my type Sam.”
She sighs, pushing her disappointment down and smiles.
“Burgers it is!”
Matt shakes his head. “Don't do that. Don't put on your in-ring face and think you can get past me. Did I give you the wrong impression about the nature of this lunch? If so I'm sorry, the last thing I wanted was to lead you on and give you the wrong idea.”
Sammi smiles, shaking her head. “Of course not silly goose. I was just curious. We're totesily good.”
Matt looks skeptical, “You're sure?”
Sammi nods her head.
“Of course! Was silly of me to ask. I'm probably more like a little sister to you.”
Matt nods but what Sammi didn't know was that Matt Reece was lying. Lying because her complete and utter innocence petrified him to no end. He wouldn't be able to live with himself if he ruined that about her by breaking her heart.
“So burgers and let's get that guacamole app. Looks tasty.” He says, using her own avoidance tactic.
The rest of the lunch continues without incident, much to both parties imminent regret.
