Father’s Day
*****
OFF CAMERA
FLASHBACK
A sixteen year old Zachary Knight is sitting in the kitchen eating a bowl of sugary sweet cereal. His mom is pouring herself a drink even though the clock reads 11:23am. The sound of footsteps as his father, Jamie, heads down the stairs. Zach hurries and grabs a gift off of the counter and rushes to meet his dad at the bottom of the stairs.
“Give him a minute, Zachary. He just got up. He has to get to work. Lord knows the bills won’t pay for themselves.”
A letdown look on the face of Zachary, as his idol speaks up.
“It’s alright, ZK. Morning bud.”
“Happy Father’s Day!”
Zach reaches out and hands a present to his dad. Zachary had accumulated some trophies already in his youth; baseball trophies, basketball medals, ribbons, and so on. As Jamie Knight opened the gift, it was a trophy.
“A trophy? For what?”
“Being the best dad.”
Zachary idolized his father. And ZK was a shining example of what a father would always want in a son. The two of them hug as Delia makes her way into the living room. She is wearing a robe, and that is barely covering her body. She was quite attractive and often enjoyed the stares from anyone that would lend a pair of eyes.
“Delia- you mind putting some clothes on?”
“Not at all.”
She smirks as she sips the lowball glass full of vodka, on the rocks. Jamie checks his watch.
“It’s not even noon!”
“But I am sure it is five o’clock, somewhere.”
Jamie shakes his head in disappointment. He grabs his bag and heads out the front door after kissing Delia on the cheek.
“ZK, walk me to my car for a minute.”
“Sure thing.”
The two of them walk out to his BMW. They were not mansion rich, but they lived well. After being an Olympic athlete, Jamie successfully transitioned into becoming an Olympic trainer. He works with Team USA on several occasions, and was sought out by some athletes on an individual basis as well.
“Son- one day you will be the man of the house. I know that you love your mother very much, as do I. But you need to make sure to watch her wicked ways.”
How could a father speak to his sixteen year old son like this? Was he vengeful towards his wife for some sort of infidelity? Or was he fed up with her alcoholic ways?
“You have a great head on your shoulders. You listen to this-”
He points to Zach’s head.
“And listen to this.”
He points to Zach’s heart.
“I am proud of you son. Thanks for the trophy. I love it.”
He hugs Zach as he throws his bag into the bag seat of the car and pulls out of the driveway. Zach heads back inside, his mother waiting for him.
“You got training, Zachary. Get showered. Don’t be fucking late, again.”
She sips her Vodka. Zachary loved training, and loved wrestling. But that is all that Delia cared about; she was more of a coach and less of a mother.

PRESENT DAY
Zachary Knight gets out of the shower and gets dressed. It is going to be a late night training session for him. A looming title opportunity in the balance, he wants to make sure that he is in peak physical condition and he is ready for whatever challenge is in front of him. He throws a shirt on as he looks at the trophies on his dresser. First places. Championships. Even MVPs. But the one that is front and center; World’s Best Dad. Zach smiles as he pauses for a minute. He closes the dresser drawer as he grabs his bag and heads out to the gym.
