"A Totesily Awesome Date"
Zack Knight and Sammi Myers
(Co-Written by the both of us)
Zachary Knight pulls into the driveway of Matt Reece’s building. He had always been taught to be a gentleman, and that includes knocking on the door instead of honking the horn and making his date hurry out to him. He is dressed in a dark pair of jeans, white sneakers, and a button up shirt. A more business casual for a nice date that he hoped would go well. There was something about Sammit that he found endearing, and he could not get her out of his mind. He walks up to the door of the building with a bouquet of of lilies in his hand. He rings the apartment that is for Matt Reece.
The intercom opens. “Hey!”
Sammi's voice floats over.
“Come on up.”
She buzzes him in.
He heads up the stairs and to the door. He gives it a couple of knocks, flowers in hand.
Unexpectedly it's Matt Reece that opens the door.
“Hey buddy, good to see you.”
“Hey. How’s it going?”
Zachary holds out his hand to shake that of Matt’s to be friendly.
“Is Sammi ready?”
“Nearly. You wanna take a seat and wait?”
Matt smiles.
“Women, need everything to be perfect, am I right?”
He laughs a bit.
“Sure. Thanks.”
Zachary heads inside.
“Nice place.”
“Nothing you can't get with a little hard work...” Sammi comes around the corner, she's wearing a yellow sundress, her dark hair pulled up in a french braid. Both men stand as she enters the room. She immediately blushes at their obvious attention.
“There's my girl.”
Zachary stands up, holding up the flowers.
“You look beautiful, Sammi.”
He smiles.
“Matt and I were just talking. I mentioned how nice this place is; it’s not bad for what it is. It’s sort of cute.”
Zach takes a little dig at Matt.
“Hard work definitely pays off, and it is what helped me get to where I am today as well. I am actually in the process of contacting out an architect for blueprints on a place of my own actually. I mean, nothing as quaint at this; but something to suit my needs.”
“Oh. That's awesome! Matty only leases here. He's got a couple places all over the states.”
Matt shrugs modestly.
“The Vermont lodge is really nice. I was hoping to have some people there for New Years. Right Sam?”
Sam nods. “Even though I told you that I am terrible on skis.”
She laughs nervously. “Maybe Zach can come...”
Matt Smiles. “I wouldn't mind except you took the last bed Sam. Maybe next time.”
“I appreciate the thought. Maybe next time.”
Zachary smiles.
“You ready, Sammi? I got us reservations at Chez Francois. I know the chef and we got a nice table for the evening.”
“Yes!” She turns to Matt and gets on tiptoes to kiss his cheek. “See you later Matty. Don't miss me too much!”
She then turns, following Zach to the door.
“Nice seeing you again, Matty.”
He leads out of the door, holding it open for Sammi. They head down the stairs as Zachary makes sure to get the building door and the car door for her. He circled around the SUV and hopped into the driver’s side.
“All comfy?”
He turned towards her, and smiled.
“Uh huh.” She slides into her seat next to him
Zach backs out of the spot and heads onto the main road. The place is about a twenty minute drive. He tries to start up some conversation.
“So how’s things been? How was training? And your date with Matt?”
She smiles.
“Good.” She says.
“Matty took me to our restaurant. The one we always go to when I visit. I think we saw Cameron Diaz but we couldn't be sure.”
She giggles.
“Well that sounds like fun.”
Zach reaches out, and takes her hand.
“So I know we haven’t exactly been on an official date, yet. But I just… be careful Sammi. I don’t trust him.”
“That's silly Zachie. Matty would never hurt me.”
“Just. Be careful.”
It was not really HIS place to try to tell her otherwise, yet. He was relatively new to her life. And Matt had been there longer than he. Zach knew that Matt would’ve been there earlier if he had felt that well. But Sammi was new to it all. She did not see what Zach saw. They had continued driving and pulled up to the place. Zach turned the car off and hopped out. He hurried to her door and opened it for her. The two of them headed inside as the Maitre D led them to a table near the back with only a few populated tables about. Zach helped her into her seat, and sat across from her.
“You ever drink wine?”
“Goodness no. I only turned 21 this last February. And Gram doesn't like spirits in the house.”
“Okay. That is fair. Well if you don’t want a glass, I won’t have one either.”
He smiles at her and pushes the wine glasses away from the two of them.
“I wasn’t sure if you liked French food, but I figured it was something fun to try if you haven’t? My mother always told me to enjoy life to its fullest. And I’ve tried to be smart with my money and success; so while I may try to be who I am and real, I do like to splurge every now and then.”
“I don't have much money. Everything I make from RSW I send home to Gram. The house is in rough shape. We just had to fix the water heater last week.”
“What else is wrong with it? I’ve done some work in the past. Let me help. I am pretty good with tools.”
“We have mold. I’ve tried to get Gram to just sell and we could rent an apartment. But she's so scared of change. She worries about me here in California without her. I wish she would come out here too.”
“Well maybe she just needs some convincing of moving out here? But if you really do what to fix up the house for her, I would love to help. However I can. But I can’t promise that I would work with a shirt on.”
He teases as their waiter brings glasses of water and is ready for their order.
She immediately blushes.
“I appreciate it, but she won't accept it. Do you speak French?”
She tries to change the subject, looking at the menu.
“Oui. Quatre ans à l'école secondaire. Quatre autres au collège.”
Zachary looks over the menu.
“How about yourself?”
She giggles.
“No idea what you said. But I know a little Italian from Gram.”
“I took it in high school and college. We took a trip to Paris in high school actually. Was fun. Do you know what you’d like to order?”
“Ummm... I’ll just have whatever you have.”
“Do you like seafood?”
“Yes. That sounds good.”
“Okay.”
Zachary looks at the waiter.
“Moules Frites commandes de deux s'il vous plaît.”
The dinner goes well as the two have a conversation about their careers, their time so far in Ready.Set.Wrestle., and their own professional futures. The meal finishes up as Zachary pays for the check.
“I can totes-ily help pay. It looks like it cost a lot of money.”
She opens her purse to look for her wallet.
“Please. It is a date. I want to pay. I mean it.”
He smiles at her as they wait for his card to come back.
“Would you want… to go for a ride or something?”
She smiles, her cheeks taking on a slight pink hue.
“I’d like that a lot.”
The server comes back as he leaves a nice tip. Getting up from the table, he leads Sammi as they exit the building. He again opens the passenger door for her and allows her to get settle. Heading over to the driver’s door, he slides in. Starting the truck, he puts the radio on low just to clear the white noise of the city around them.
“So, did you enjoy dinner?”
He heads down the street, away from the bright lights of the city.
“It was very nice...” She turns to look at him. “Let's skip the small talk and go straight to the large pink elephant in the room. I suppose this might come off odd, but what are your intentions Zach...”
She's surprisingly calm and serious.
He was quite taken back.
“Well, straight to the point.”
He grins, loving the assertive Sammi Myers.
“Well I like you, obviously. And I hope you feel the same. My intentions were to ask you out on a date and hopefully maybe another date.. And another… and maybe we could spend more time together.”
She takes a deep breath.
“You know my friends keep telling me that it's strange for a guy that wanted to end my career to suddenly be interested in me as more than a friend. I want to believe you Zachie...” She stops herself, clears her throat and tries to remain serious. “Zachary. I just need to be sure. I have never really done this before.”
He nods towards her.
“I get it. And I don’t blame you at all. I was a jerk. Plain and simple. And you didn’t deserve that. I was unfortunately lead in a bad direction from my mother. I’ve decided to try to distance myself from her poison for the time being. I really do like you. I just, I’ve had girlfriends in the past. But you… you are different. You are special. I get these… butterflies when you are around.”
He smiles at her.
“I just… I don’t want to get in the way if there is something going on with you and… him.”
She bites her lip for a second.
“Matty is a nice guy and he's been there for me this last year. For a while I had this big crush on him but after our date and an awkward kiss, I can't see him as more than my friend.”
Zach continues to drive as he pulls into a park with a nice view of a lake. Zach puts the truck in park and turns towards Sammi.
“Awkward? Well I can’t lie… that sorta makes me feel good.”
Zach brushes her hair back.
“And it makes me want to show you how much a good kisser I can be.”
He bites his lip, almost as if she was making him become the less confident one.
“...was just...” Her voice has dropped an octave lower. “Like he was only doing it because he saw us kissing.”
She avoids his eyes.
“That is not cool. And I am sorry that you had to deal with that sort of stuff. I knew that you liked him.”
He pauses, reaching out and taking her hand.
“How about this. If you like me, cool. Maybe we can continue dating. If you don’t feel that way, I say we still hang as friends. No hard feelings. But he is an idiot for not seeing you for how amazing you are.”
She nods.
“He knows. He’s told me that... I think my... Innocence scares him.”
She chews on her lip now.
“Well I know that I am not some sort of crazed man or anything like that. Just holding your hand, it’s nice. The innocence that you have, I find it so endearing. And I’d really like to spend more time with you. Which sort of makes me want to know. I’ve said my peace, but what about you? Do you even see me that way?”
She blushes.
“I do... Like you I mean. I really liked when you umm... Kissed me.”
Without a word, he moves in and kisses her. This time his lips lingering a bit longer on hers than before. After the kiss, he slowly pulls back.
“You mean, like that?”
She nods wordlessly, her eyes going wide.
“Well, do you want to do more of that?”
“Ye...Yes.”
He leans in and kisses her again, this time caressing her face with his hand. His kiss is a little more passionate than before. He finally pulls back to see her reaction.
Her eyes are still closed, her lips parted. Her breathing is rapid.
“Sammi?” he asks. “I don’t want to be too forward with you. So if I ever cross a line or make you uncomfortable, say so, okay?”
She opens her eyes. “Okay. But I'm not... Uncomfortable... Right now I mean...”
She flushes a deeper red now at her inability to form a full sentence.
He lifts the center console and slides over a bit closer to her, again places his hand to the side of her face. He kisses her again, both of them breathing heavily.
He whispers into her ear. “You are so beautiful.”
He continues to kiss her, and begins to kiss her neck.
She pulls back. “I... Umm... I don't think...”
She's obviously flustered.
He pulls back.
“I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to-”
She finds her voice, reaching out she strokes the side of his face.
“I can understand that maybe other girls are... Umm... Ready to just give everything right away, but we are still getting to know each other. I'm just, old fashioned I guess.”
She once again is biting her bottom lip.
“No. I would. No, I wasn’t trying to.”
He pulls back.
“I didn’t mean to give off that vibe. I am sorry. I just really love kissing you.”
She let's out a giggle. “You do? I barely know what I'm doing. I'm sure your other girlfriends were much better.”
“It’s not a competition. And I know that we barely know each other, but already I feel that you are more special than any of them. It’s not like there are a ton either. I never was serious with anyone else. Wrestling always came first. Wrestling is not anything I was lucky enough to share with anyone before.”
He rubs her hand.
“You are amazing just the way you are. Don’t feel like you need to live up to any sort of expectations. If anything, it is me that needs to be better.”
“Maybe we should stick a pin in this and maybe next time I will be a little more comfortable but I really like kissing you too Zachie-Bear.”
She reaches forward to play with a strand of his hair that hand fallen forward and smiles.
“We can go at any pace that you are comfortable with. I mean it.”
He smiles.
“I don’t want to keep you out too late… but….”
He turns the truck off and shoves the keys into his pocket. He heads out of the truck and down the hill towards the lake trying to see if she follows.
Curious, she hops out of the truck and follows the path he took.
Sammi heads down the hill to find Zach sitting on the lake’s edge on a hoody that he grabbed. The sun had gone down and the stars were out. Zach looks back at her.
“You going to join me?”
He pats the ground.
She carefully sits, trying to remain ladylike in her dress as she sits down beside him.
“Are you a deep thinker Zach?” She asks, looking out at the water.
“I try to be. I’ve been to this spot a few times. This is a great place to think.”
He wraps his arm around her, as the two of them just enjoy the moment.
“Your Grandpa was a deep thinker. I would sometimes catch him in thoughts and I wondered what he thought about sometimes.”
She leans into him. “I miss him dearly.”
“I’m sorry.”
He hugs her tightly.
“I wish I had gotten to know him like you did.”
The two of them remained silent for a few moments as they just sat in deep thought.
