Grandfather
*****
OFF CAMERA
“I’ll let you two talk.”
Sammi kisses his cheek and walks away. Zach steps forward, hands in the pockets of his pants.
“Hello, Grandfather.”
He has a long pause.
“I don’t really know how to-”
Zach scratches his head.
“I feel dumb talking to…”
Zach looks back, seeing Sammi standby some distance away but she smiles offering some encouragement. He keeps his hands in his pockets.
“Well I guess I need to apologize. I want to say I am sorry for being a dick, I guess.”
Zach sways back and forth a bit, still unsure as to how this is all supposed to happen.
“I just. I was being told by Delia all of these things. I was lied to. She never really cared. She was always out for herself.”
Zach begins to breakdown, and the words just flow like a river.
“After my dad died, she just poisoned me. He always kept things together. He kept her sober for as long as he could. He kept her in check. And the day that he died; she became a monster. Selfish. Conceited. Spiteful. And it was not fair to you. I just didn’t know better. Please, grandfather. Forgive me.”
Zachary falls to his knees, placing his right hand on the gravestone.
“Sammi told me the truth. I see the good that you saw in her. And I really like her. I am going to protect her as much as I can. I know that she can handle things on her own, but I want to be there for her. She’s been there for me, too. She brought me here. She knew it was for the best. To make amends. To say my sorries. And I thank her for it. And grandfather… I thank you. I thank you for doing all that you could to make me the best man that you could. I will make sure to give it my all and to make you proud. And to make dad proud. I love you, grandpa.”
He lifts his head towards the sky and lets in a deep breath. He's silent for a while, and when Sammi looks back to see him unmoving. She gives a small smile before moving back beside him. She sits down, crossing her legs. He feels her hand at his back and she speaks and it's probably the most serious and sincere he’s seem of her.
“Life is precious and short Zach. People forget that. They take it for granted. A lot of people have the, ‘I’ll worry about it tomorrow’ attitude. Until you run out of tomorrows. People who haven't experienced death, act like it doesn't exist until it happens to them.”
She looks at the marker.
“That's why I am the way I am. I don't want to have any regrets. For myself or for the people I care about so I'm happy and make sure people understand that life... the life you were given... whether it be from god or just the right molecules merging at the right time... well it's a gift. And that gift has an expiration date. I don't want to be known for being a bitch. Or unfeeling. Or worst of them all, a nobody.”
She puts a hand on the stone now.
“I may not be related to Cillian by blood but by being my best, his life means something. You know?”
He nods and reaches up, taking her arm. She leans her head on his shoulder as the two of them just sit in silence allowing the both of them to pay their respects in their own way.
